Walker, 36, has been with the Hurricanes for four seasons, but has just three goals and two assists in 32 games in an injury-limited season.
Walker, a 15-year NHL veteran, is scheduled to be a free agent on July 1. he is considered a gritty player and provides a solid locker-room presence.
Next was the acquisition of center Eric Belanger from the Minnesota Wild for a second-round draft pick.
Belanger, 32, also will be a free agent this summer. he has 13 goals and 22 assists in 35 games, ranking seventh in the NHL with wins on 57.6 percent of his faceoffs.
Belanger previously played for Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau when both were with the AHL’s Lowell Lock Monsters from 1999 to 2001. he had 23 goals and 35 assists in 78 games under Boudreau.
The Capitals’ third move was to reacquire defenseman Milan Jurcina from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2010 sixth-round draft pick. the Capitals had traded Jurcina, 26, to the Blue Jackets as part of a package earlier this season.
The Capitals and Hurricanes worked out a second deal later in the day, with Carolina shipping defenseman Joe Corvo in exchange for defenseman Brian Pothier, prospect Oskar Osala and a 2011 second-round pick.
