Gerard Butler, Elaine Paige and Sir Michael Caine were among the big names who flocked to the world premiere of Love Never Dies. The musical at London’s Adelphi theatre by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber is the sequel to his 1986 hit The Phantom of the Opera.
Set ten years after the original, the story finds the Phantom after his mysterious disappearance from the Paris Opera House. Lloyd Webber created the production with the help of comic and writer Ben Elton, who fine-tuned the synopsis. Early reviews have been fairly savage, with one theatre blog renaming it “Paint Never Dries.”
Musical legend Lloyd Webber is ignoring the online hype. He said: ” If everybody worried about those, you’d go back to the days of Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera – if there’d have been the net then, you’d have almost given up. At the Phantom of the Opera we had one night when the chandelier didn’t move.”
Love Never Dies is set to open in New York later in the year and in Australia in 2011.

Canadian actor Corey Haim has died at the age of 38 of an apparent accidental drug overdose, the Los Angeles police department says.
Police told Canwest News Service they received a call just before 4 a.m. Wednesday that Haim had been transported from a residence in North Hollywood to Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Burbank, Calif., where the actor was pronounced dead, said LAPD Sgt. Michael Cammert.
The actor is best known for the films The Lost Boys and License to Drive. Haim, who was born in Toronto, was known for his many collaborations with fellow actor Corey Feldman. The two appeared in a reality show, The two Coreys, on A&E from 2007 to 2008.
Never able to capture the stardom he had as a youth, Haim struggled for years with substance abuse.
According to Haim’s website, his interests as a child were music and playing pro hockey, but he was bitten by the acting bug while attending an audition with his sister.
Just three weeks ago, Haim and Feldman were spotted together in Hollywood by TMZ. when asked if he was maintaining his sobriety, Haim told the outlet he’s “been good for awhile,” and appeared to be excited about upcoming projects.
“I’ve got a whole bunch of things coming up, man,” he said. “I’m directing for the first time … I’ve got a few things happening.”
In a 1995 interview with Canwest News Service, Haim looked back with fondness on his status in the ’80s.
“They called me Hollywood’s bad boy,” he says with a hint of pride. “I pushed the envelope one too many times. so I had a long vacation. a long, long, long vacation. now I’m off vacation and I want to get back to work. I’m on track to get there. I’m going to bow down to the gods in a way I’ve never done before.”
While not a member of the formal “brat pack” that included Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy, Haim had his own circle of famous preteen friends, including Ricky Schroeder and Feldman.
When the group fell apart, so — it seems — did Haim’s career.
“Not really,” he said. “We just wanted to do different things. we grew in different directions. But there was an innocence to that time and you can see it in the movies from that era. There wasn’t all this gratuitous sex and violence that you see today.”
Despite his many substance-abuse problems over the years, his death came as a shock to many. Several celebrities took to Twitter to remember the 38-year-old actor and express their condolences. Here are a few of their messages:

Over lunch the other day they were telling tales of The great Beer Raid at Resurrection Ale House, the tidy, good-eating, “neighborhood beer bistro” at 24th and Gray’s Ferry.
Most excitement the place had seen since it opened last year. The grist of urban legend. And on the eve of Philly Beer Weekend, no less, the mini-beer fest starting tomorrow, previewing the city’s big-daddy Beer Week in June.
“They came in with axes!” a Resurrection staffer offered wide-eyed, trying for a rise out of a guy having a burger.
Well, not quite. The squad of liquor enforcement officers (they’re a plainclothes unit of State Police, but not troopers) didn’t carry axes.
But they packed regulation heat. And for a moment last Thursday afternoon, it was unclear what was going down. they asked the bartender to step away from the bar. then they stepped in.
Four of them; same as the number of patrons (whom the owner bought a free round as the raid unfolded).
After four hours, the enforcers carted out nearly 200 bottles of beer.
At Resurrection’s sister pubs the scene was the same. At Memphis Taproom, the craft-beer shrine in Port Richmond, out came one-sixth of a keg and more than 100 bottles; at Local 44, the West Philly gastropub, three small kegs.
The impetus? Acting on a complaint, the officers were checking out, yes, the beer’s registration papers.
Their main job is to crack down on drug and nuisance bars, and some teen drinking.
But registration papers?
If you’ve never heard of a beer registration, you’ve got company: People who work for the state’s Liquor Control Board say they’d never heard of such a bust themselves.
But there is such a thing, right there in Section 445 of the byzantine state liquor code. Brewers and importers must register every new variety with the Liquor Control Board, and pay a $75 fee.
Harrisburg enforcement officials say the reason is to protect consumers. How else to know whether the beer is from Victory (legit) or a backyard home-brewer (not)?
The list, as the craft beer revolution has flowered, now runs to 45 pages. (Flowered and borne fruit: As big brands lagged last year, independent U.S. brewers saw a robust 10 percent jump in sales.)
Leigh Maida and Brendan Hartranft, who own all three bars, argue that since they bought the beer in question from licensed wholesalers and paid taxes, they assumed it was, so to speak, kosher.
Some of it, even by the bureau’s own double-checking, was. Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale, for instance, was registered neat and clean. (The red-faced bureau returned it to the bars Tuesday.)
Some of the other stuff was still being checked out. But bureau director John Lutz was clearly feeling the heat.
Any legal burden would fall more heavily on the distributor or importers than the bar, he said. The raid wasn’t knee-jerk, he said – agents had checked out the validity of the complaint on previous visits.
But the tide was running in Resurrection’s favor. The enforcers were being called on the carpet. A key lawmaker called the raid “ridiculous.”
For the black eye that The great Beer Raid gave to the liquor enforcement apparatus, they might as well have.

March 10 (Bloomberg) — Yields on Chile’s inflation-linked interest-rate swaps fell to a record as economists bet inflation will quicken amid boosted government spending and a shortage of goods following the country’s worst earthquake in 50 years.
A central bank survey released today showed the median estimate for year-end inflation rose to 3.5 percent, from 2.7 percent in a survey published last month before the quake. Chile was struck by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake on Feb. 27 that destroyed houses, bridges and factories.
the yield on Chile’s one-year inflation-linked interest- rate swaps fell five basis points, or 0.05 percentage point, to -2.05 percent at 3:29 p.m. New York time, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Earlier it fell to -2.07 percent, the lowest level since at least June 2003 when Bloomberg records began. Declining yields indicate investors are demanding less compensation for receiving payments linked to inflation because they expect consumer prices to rise.
President-elect Sebastian “Pinera will have to ramp up spending and the central bank will need to keep interest rates low for longer,” said Hugo Aravena, who helps manage $1.5 billion at Scotiabank’s Scotia AFG in Santiago. “That will have an impact on inflation.”
Quake Damage
Policy makers will probably increase the overnight lending rate to 2 percent by December 2010, from a record low now of 0.5 percent, according to the central bank’s survey of pension fund managers, mutual funds and insurance companies. That’s down from a median forecast of 2.5 percent in the February survey.
Pinera inherits from President Michelle Bachelet a catastrophe that may have caused as much as $30 billion in damage to ports, hospitals and the main highway, according to estimates by disaster-scenario modeler Eqecat Inc.
since the quake, Pinera has reiterated his goal of 6 percent economic growth this year. Rebuilding the 500,000 ruined homes could cost about $20 billion, he said in an interview with state-owned National Television on Feb. 28. Repairing and replacing hospitals may cost another $5 billion, he said.
Economists lowered their growth estimates for Chile to 4.5 percent this year, according to the central bank’s survey, from a 4.9 percent estimate last month.
Inflation Bets
the one-year breakeven inflation rate, a measure of expectations for future price increases based on the prices of interest-rate swaps, shows traders raised bets for consumer price rises in the next 12 months to 3.21 percent today from 2.85 percent a month ago, according to Bloomberg calculations using Deutsche Bank AG prices. Breakeven inflation measures the difference in yield between an inflation-linked loan and one in pesos.
Chile’s peso dropped the most in a month on speculation the government may finance part of the reconstruction with local bond sales and amid declines in copper, the nation’s biggest export. Copper prices fell today on renewed speculation that metals demand will decline as the global economy stalls.
the peso weakened for a second day, dropping 1.2 percent to 518.65 per dollar, from 512.23 yesterday.
the currency is up 1.1 percent this month, driven in part by speculation the government will repatriate overseas savings to finance the rebuilding effort.
Chilean Central Bank President Jose de Gregorio said in a March 7 interview the peso may have “overshot” on bets the government will need to sell dollars from its $15 billion copper savings funds.
‘Peso was Overreacting’
“It does seem the peso was overreacting and the market is now correcting” the move, said Aravena. “There’s a lot of uncertainty on how much the government will bring from abroad and how much it would finance with local bond sales.”
in Argentina, the yield on the country’s 7 percent dollar bonds due in 2015 fell 47 basis points to 12.95 percent, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co. the country’s peso was little changed at 3.8588 per dollar, from 3.8602 yesterday.
Colombia’s peso weakened 0.3 percent to 1,892 per dollar, from 1,887.35 yesterday. the yield on the country’s 11 percent benchmark bonds due in July 2020 fell six basis points to 8.85 percent, according to Colombia’s stock exchange.
Peru’s sol advanced 0.1 percent to 2.8385 per dollar, from 2.84 yesterday. the central bank said it didn’t intervene in the foreign-exchange market today after buying $304 million earlier this month to ease gains in the sol. the currency has gained 1.7 percent so far this year.
the yield on the country’s 8.6 percent sol-denominated bond due August 2017 rose one basis point to 5.04 percent, according to Citigroup Inc.’s local unit.
Venezuela’s bolivar was unchanged at 6.89 per dollar in the unregulated parallel market, traders said. Individuals and companies buy dollars in the unregulated market when they can’t get government authorization to purchase them at the official exchange rate of 2.6 per dollar for essential goods and 4.3 per dollar for nonessential goods.
