Softball changes date for twin bill

By On March 10, 2010No Comments

The softball team made a couple of changes to its schedule this week. First, the Cougars added a game against Monmouth on Tuesday and won 3-1 behind 10 strikeouts by Amanda Crabtree.

The Cougars also moved Wednesday’s doubleheader against Southern, which includes the fourth annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game, to Thursday due to impending inclement weather. The first game will start at 5 p.m., and the nightcap is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The slate of events for Thursday includes a silent auction, allowing fans to bid on everything from sports memorabilia to the special pink jerseys and helmets sported by the players. The Department of Athletics said 50 percent of all ticket sales and 100 percent of the silent auction’s proceeds will benefit the Houston affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

In addition, commemorative pins will be available for $2, with all proceeds going to the foundation.

Fans can also get involved by wearing pink to the games to show their support for not only the Cougars, but also a worthy cause.

more good news for Goodnight

Fresh off his selection to the Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team, Cougars righthander Michael Goodnight has racked up another pair of awards.

First, Goodnight was honored as the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday. then came word that the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association had selected him as the NCBWA/Pro-Line National Pitcher of the Week.

The recognition comes on the heels of Goodnight’s dominant performance last weekend. The sophomore threw seven shutout innings and struck out nine batters in the Cougars’ 1-0 win over USA Today/ESPN then-No. 5 Texas.

Floyd keeps flying

Following in her family’s fast footsteps, junior sprinter Kalyn Floyd has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The event will be held Friday and Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark.

Floyd, whose older sister Ebonie was a standout for the Cougars from 2003-2007, earned silver in the 200-meter dash after posting a provisional-qualifying time of 24.12 seconds at the Conference USA Championships in February. She earned her spot at the NCAAs by running the 200-m in 23.49 seconds at the Texas A&M Challenge on Feb. 13.

Lindsay Lohan Confirms Emanuel Ungaro Exit

By Castina On March 10, 2010 View Comments

Lindsay Lohan — Or should we say “Milkaholic?” — has confirmed that she’s parted ways with Emanuel Ungaro. After one critically-panned collection of pasties and “Ho Stroll” club numbers as Artistic Advisor of Ungaro, Lindsay is no longer designing threads for the French fashion house.

Earlier this week, the brand’s owner Asim Abdullah revealed Lindsay was “not involved” with the latest collection.

When asked why she wasn’t at Ungaro’s Paris Fashion Week show this week, Lindsay told Women’s Wear Daily: “Because I don’t work for them anymore. There’s legal things going on; I can’t really discuss it.”

New eReader Called Skiff Enters The Fray

By On March 10, 2010 View Comments

With the countdown to the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas just a few days away comes the onslaught of launch previews.

The big one today will be Google’s own smartphone; the Nexus One. The mythical Google phone becomes a reality later today. No one is really sure how it will be different from the other smartphones with the Google Android operating system. but, there’s lots of excitement around Google’s foray into hardware regardless.

But I digress. Let’s let Skiff have their 15 minutes today before Google takes over.

Skiff is a new eReader that has two main brags; an 11.6 inch screen making it the largest available eReader on the market beating out the Amazon’s Kindle DX and it uses some sort of new “foil technology” that makes its the most hearty, durable screen on the market as well. The other eReaders use glass in their screens (so don’t sit on one of them, by accident).

Here’s what we don’t know about Skiff:

- what it will cost to buy one (pricing is still being worked out)
- what it will cost to use one (Skiff is in partnership with Sprint’s 3G network, which makes me cringe. No one needs another device requiring a monthly wireless plan).

Here’s what we do know about Skiff:

- It’s parent company is Hearst (as in newspapers). so,Skiff has come to save the news print business.
- Customers would buy content through the Skiff store. oh Lord, could another app store be next? The only thing more depressing than not making money selling iPhone apps would be losing money making apps for the Skiff store.

Parting thoughts on Skiff:

- It’s probably a decent product.
- It will probably won’t live long enough to become a trivial pursuit question.
-The “confirmed rumors” are looking pretty solid that Apple will finally announce its iTablet later this month and have them on sale by March. All believe it will be a game changer in the eReader market.
- Don’t count out Amazon’s Kindle. Kindle has been building steam for awhile, almost single-handedly building the fledgling eReader market.
- Last year, some 5 million eReaders of all brands were sold. Look for that number to explode around, oh, March! (Getting back to Apple’s iTablet, again).

Bottomline: good luck, Skiff. You will need it.

An armed society is a polite society ~ Robert Heinlein

Until Don Zaidle, my editor at Texas Fish & Game magazine, sent me the email last week, I’d never heard of the CNPSR. And now that I’ve read the email, and know what it is, I wish I still hadn’t heard of it. You will wish the same thing in about two minutes.

The members of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees recently sent a letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis, whining about Section 512 of Public Law 111-24, which will go into effect 22 February 2010. this provision, authored by Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK), effectively extends what Second Amendment rights remain in America to our national parks.

Previously, it has pretty much been illegal to carry a gun in a national park. of course, if you’ve been to a national park in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, or any of the other states that contain large, furry predators such as bears, you carried a gun anyway, unless you’re even dumber than the geezers at CNPSR. Nobody with the IQ of a pinecone traipses around in bear country unarmed. a law that imperils citizens should be ignored.

But the rocket scientists at CNPSR seem to think we’ve all been leaving our guns at home when we came to their parks. as long as no one reads this column to them, they’ll probably still think that. which is fine, as long as they leave Tom alone.

Tom Coburn, M.D., is one of the good guys. He’s been working to preserve our 2A rights for years, first in the house and now in the senate. this national parks thing is just the latest in a long series of battles he’s fought to help keep us all from becoming subjects, instead of citizens.

What Section 512 of Public Law 111-24 actually says is that, after 22 Feb., the laws concerning the possession of firearms in a national park will be consistent with the laws of the state the park is in. Yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition. So sue me.

Jihad Jane

By gulam On March 10, 2010 View Comments

Agencies unsealed accuses in the United States against a female dubbed “Jihad Jane” and caught 7 Muslims in Ireland Tues for their alleged participation in a plan to kill a Swedish cartoonist.

The allegations highlighting the current sensitivity of sketch renderings of the prophet Mohammad, and are an uncommon case of a white American female becoming tangled in worldwide jihad over the Net.

The indictment versus “Jihad Jane” was open in Pennsylvania Tues; the 7 caught in Ireland were being queried Wed.

Ireland’s news show reported that 4 men and 3 women whose nationalities weren’t given were caught in Waterford and Cork, Ireland.

Swedish cartoonist L. Vilks lighted controversy in 2007, with his cartoon, with the head of the prophet Mohammad on the body of a dog like animal. Later that yr, an Al Qaeda very faction leader set a $100,000 prize on that cartoonist’s head.

The New York Times describes that C. R. LaRose , light-haired, green eyed women, from the suburban area of Philadelphia who titled herself Jihad Jane on a net posting, stands charged of connecting with activists over the Net to plan acts of terrorism. The Times cited a law-enforcement official who told that the accuses against Ms. LaRose were related to the arrest of the 7 Muslims in Ireland.

The craze over Vilks’s sketch abided by earlier riots and furiousness following the separate issue of cartoons satirizing the prophet Mohammad in Sep 2005 in a Danish paper.

But Americans haven’t checked the cartoons reissued in their own newspapers.

I can view small reason, other than physical fear, bottom-line self-preservation, and just bad assessment that the United States media and the public functionaries committed with supporting our freedoms wimped out so exhaustively.

Why do you think Arsenal is showing so much steel this season?

By On March 10, 2010 View Comments

I am an Arsenal fan and the last 5 seasons have been quite painful for me watching Arsenal play well most of the time but get screwed due to poor finishing or defending. However after selling off Henry, it seems the team have been given a kick up the backside and they are showing real guts and producing impressive results. If they manage to beat Man U,Liverpool and especially Chelsea this season ,I don’t foresee the Premier League trophy going to any other team. What do you think?
